Having a Party on the QR

Walking down Brick Lane in London over the weekend, I saw this poster:

It’s advertising a “secret” party somewhere in the area. The location is given in a QR barcode, which is the seemingly random mosaic that covers most of the poster. As the instructions suggest, it’s not meant to be read by eye, but with […]

Bone-Conducting Bluetooth Earpieces Set to Revolutionise Hands-Free Experience

You may already be aware that Bluetooth headsets have improved dramatically in recent years. Noise-cancelling technology is a mass-market selling point, with products such as Aliph’s Jawbone and Motorola’s H12 showing how far we’ve come from the early days, when Bluetooth earpieces only worked in quiet offices. While these products do a fantastic job cancelling […]

An Industry in So Many Words

Last weekend, I went to Open Tech 2008. I saw Bill Thomson snapping away in a couple of sessions, and I remembered I hadn’t visited his Web site for a while.
Surfing to his site after the weekend, I encountered a Wordle. If you haven’t seen them before, Wordles are graphical representations of written items — […]

Nokia Squares Up to Software Rivals by Buying Symbian and Moving to Open Source

Earlier this morning, Nokia announced it would buy the 52.1 percent of Symbian shares it doesn’t already hold, merge the company with its own S60 organisation and create the Symbian Foundation. This new entity will introduce an open-source licence model for the Symbian operating system and the S60, UIQ and MOAP platforms. The move’s a […]

It’s Going to Be an Eight-Megapixel Christmas

If the rumours I’m hearing are correct, there will be at least six mobile phones featuring eight-megapixel cameras appearing in the second half of 2008.
The relentless megapixel “arms race” shows no sign of letting up and it leaves me wondering, “Why?”
My personal experiences suggest there’s still a lot of work to be done in improving […]

More and More MVNOs Enter the Italian Market

I can’t help but notice the sheer number of announcements coming out of Italy about mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). Italy has a mobile penetration rate well above 100% — there are more phones than people — but there still seems to be room for another MVNO.

Part of the reason for all this activity is […]

I’m Lost without My Nokia N95

When I first discovered Nokia Maps on my N95, I was a quite underwhelmed by it. The phone took an extremely long time to find satellites and pinpoint my position. By the time it had placed me on a map, my impatience had taken over and I’d reached for my traditional A-Z paper map. But […]

Vodafone Deal Signals Change in Apple’s iPhone Distribution Strategy

Today Vodafone announced it will offer the iPhone in 10 new countries. The deal gives Apple a much-needed shot in the arm at a time when its international strategy seemed to be faltering.
Vodafone will sell the iPhone “later this year” in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and […]

Nokia’s Numbering Doesn’t Add Up

Nokia launched another three phones this morning, and as soon as I saw the names I threw my hands up in despair. Once again it’s recycled numbers used for earlier phones. I think this will only confuse its customers and distributors.

The latest misstep’s the worst to date, in my opinion. Nokia has christened two of […]
