More and More MVNOs Enter the Italian Market

I can’t help but notice the sheer number of announcements coming out of Italy about mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs). Italy has a mobile penetration rate well above 100% — there are more phones than people — but there still seems to be room for another MVNO.

Part of the reason for all this activity is […]

I’m Lost without My Nokia N95

When I first discovered Nokia Maps on my N95, I was a quite underwhelmed by it. The phone took an extremely long time to find satellites and pinpoint my position. By the time it had placed me on a map, my impatience had taken over and I’d reached for my traditional A-Z paper map. But […]

Vodafone Deal Signals Change in Apple’s iPhone Distribution Strategy

Today Vodafone announced it will offer the iPhone in 10 new countries. The deal gives Apple a much-needed shot in the arm at a time when its international strategy seemed to be faltering.
Vodafone will sell the iPhone “later this year” in Australia, the Czech Republic, Egypt, Greece, Italy, India, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and […]

Nokia’s Numbering Doesn’t Add Up

Nokia launched another three phones this morning, and as soon as I saw the names I threw my hands up in despair. Once again it’s recycled numbers used for earlier phones. I think this will only confuse its customers and distributors.

The latest misstep’s the worst to date, in my opinion. Nokia has christened two of […]

Apple Must Rethink iPhone Strategy in Europe Now

In a research note I wrote a couple of weeks ago I made the observation that Apple’s strategy in Europe was faltering. Growing evidence suggests that unless the company overhauls its approach to the European market it risks killing the initial momentum it secured for the iPhone.

Apple’s COO, Tim Cook, stated on an earnings call […]

A Tank of Unleaded and a Dongle Phone, Please

The Toshiba G450 caught my eye as soon as I saw it on the gadget blogs in January. It’s manufactured by Chinese ODM TechFaith as an “HSDPA modem phone” — personally I’ve taken to calling it the “dongle phone”.

If Toshiba price and market it well, this revolutionary design has a chance to capitalise on exploding […]

N810 Internet Tablet Shows Nokia at Its Best and Worst

I’m posting this from my shiny new toy — a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet. It cost me about as much as an entry-level laptop, but I can’t resist tiny, powerful gadgets. It’s got a great slide-out keyboard, GPS and a bright, sharp screen. I love the stand, which flips out into three positions and lets […]

Sports Devices: Another Area of Convergence

Last weekend I rediscovered Nokia’s Sports Tracker software, which I’d installed on my N95 months ago. Nokia has now launched a Web site to accompany the application. Users can upload their running or walking activities to the site and then view their route on a map. They can also see a range of statistical results, […]

Nokia’s New Entry-Level Phones Look Beyond First-Time Buyers

It seems to me that dedicated events for emerging markets are becoming a regular fixture in Nokia’s calendar. They show just how seriously Nokia takes its entry-level phones. From manufacturing to packaging, distribution and marketing, it’s this level of commitment that makes Nokia the dominant phone brand in Africa and India.
On 2 April 2008, […]

Sounds Like a Musical Year Ahead

I predict 2008 will have a very distinct soundtrack, as another company announces a mobile music download service.
The launch today, 1 April 2008, of a music service by Danish mobile network operator TDC adds to similar announcements by operators and other companies hoping to get into this market. TDC’s service is called Play; it […]
