Market Forecast: Virtual and Augmented Reality

A five-year forecast of the VR and AR market

  • Five-year VR and AR forecasts
  • Splits by category
  • Split by form factor
  • Scenario-based
  • Updated twice a year
  • Worldwide forecast

The forecast provides a global scenario-based five-year outlook for shipments of devices in three categories: smartphone VR, dedicated VR and AR, and the subcategories of AR glasses and mixed reality are recognised within AR. The categorization is revised at every forecast update, to reflect the new knowledge of this very young market. New categories are likely to emerge.

Three scenarios are presented: low, mid and high.

The forecast provides insight on the installed base, shipments and sell-in value of each category. Each category's shipments and value are then split into sub-categories to offer further granularity. A detailed split of the shipments into form factors is provided, and sub-sections are identified and discussed.

The forecast is delivered in Excel with supporting presentation material. The supporting document discusses the market categorisation, main assumptions, the market developments that have led to any significant changes of the assumptions and subsequently the forecast, key findings and conclusions, and major risks to the forecast.

On request, we can provide further elements of our model and assumptions.

The forecast is revised and published twice a year, although disruptive changes in the market might prompt unscheduled updates.
