Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are vital to the UK’s prosperity, yet their needs are often overlooked. Our research has highlighted their growing reliance on mobile networks, but these often fall short of expectations, leading to widespread frustration.
SMEs contribute significantly to UK employment and turnover but are being held back by poor network quality, especially in rural areas. Poor connectivity ranks as one of the top challenges for employees, leading businesses to prioritize investments in 5G technology. Furthermore, mobile usage has surged in recent years, with smartphone data expected to more than double by 2029, making network improvements critical.
Although the UK was among the first to launch 5G, its networks have fallen behind, which puts businesses at a competitive disadvantage. Rural SMEs are particularly unhappy with mobile service availability and reliability.
Investing in 5G and fixed wireless access are priorities for IT decision-makers in the UK, supporting improved cloud access, hybrid working, real-time communication and AI-based tools. However, without sufficient network investment, businesses will struggle to fully benefit from 5G.
