- CCS Insight proud to support initiative that preserves mobile industry’s history
- One-day launch exhibition will publicize online archive of hundreds of mobile phones
- Catalogue of devices aims to inspire next generation of engineers and designers
23 November 2021: CCS Insight is delighted to announce its participation in the launch of the Mobile Phone Museum, an online archive of mobile phones from 1984 to the present day.
The museum’s site goes live today, at www.mobilephonemuseum.com. To celebrate the site’s launch, principal sponsor Vodafone is hosting a one-day event in London’s Soho. A selection of the museum’s collection of over 2,100 phones will be on display, grouped into themes including fashion, movies, and the 80s.
The museum’s co-founders, Ben Wood and Matt Chatterley, have spent over two decades assembling the huge collection of phones, including rare, unusual and downright bizarre examples of what is now the world’s most common piece of consumer electronics. Each catalogue entry reveals a phone’s technical specifications and the story behind it, as well as notable features.
Ben Wood, who is also Chief Analyst at technology research firm CCS Insight, said, “This all started as a passion project over 25 years ago, so it’s immensely exciting to work with Vodafone to launch the museum and to see so many industry veterans and other friendly faces at the exhibition. None of this would have been possible without the extraordinary generosity and effort of a handful of eager volunteers, donors and sponsors, so I want to thank them sincerely for their contributions”.
Alongside Vodafone and mobile technology recovery and distribution experts Genuine Solutions, CCS Insight is supporting the Mobile Phone Museum’s efforts to make the industry’s history of innovation available to everyone for free.
The Mobile Phone Museum is a registered charity, created to safeguard mobile phones and related devices from the past 37 years, as well as develop an education programme to raise awareness of how mobile phones have evolved. Initially, the project has launched as an online showcase, but in future the team hopes to work with a leading museum and other sponsors to curate pop-up exhibits of its devices.
