Ben Wood: The new phones build on existing Ascend models. Huawei is becoming a disruptive smartphone challenger; tier-one Android phone-makers should be worried.

ZTE Unveils Era Quad-Core Smartphone
(http://wwwen.zte.com.cn/en/press_center/news/201202/t20120227_288078.html)
Geoff Blaber: ZTE comes out of the shade after a quiet CES with a keenly specified flagship Android device. It is another coup for Nvidia given its use of Tegra 3 and Icera modem, and a clear statement of intent from the number-four global manufacturer by volume.

ZTE Launches Orbit Smartphone
(http://wwwen.zte.com.cn/en/press_center/news/201202/t20120227_288075.html)
Geoff Blaber: The Orbit is as important for Microsoft as it is for ZTE. The device exploits the new lower-specification requirements for Windows Phone. It is likely to challenge Nokia’s Lumia 610 given its transfer price will be below €140.

ZTE Announces Range of Smartphones
(http://wwwen.zte.com.cn/en/press_center/news/201202/t20120227_288077.html)
Ben Wood: This announcement reaffirms ZTE’s ambition to enter top three by 2015 and will worry rivals.

HTC Launches Three One Model Phones
(http://www.virtualpressoffice.com/publicsiteContentFileAccess/735537/735537.html/?fileContentId=735537&fileName=735537.html&fromOtherPageToDisableHistory=Y)
Ben Wood: HTC rationalises portfolio. Quad-core HTC One X will be “halo” product, and commitment from 140 operators and distributors worldwide is impressive start for this updated range, indicating the strength of HTC’s brand in many markets.

Nokia Announces 808 PureView Symbian phone with 41-Megapixel Camera
(http://press.nokia.com/2012/02/27/nokia-808-pureview-ushers-in-a-revolution-in-smartphone-imaging/)

Samsung Unveils Galaxy Beam Android Smartphone
(http://www.samsungmobilepress.com/2012/02/26/Share-the-Fun-with-Samsung-GALAXY-Beam)
Ben Wood: This is another example of Samsung trying to differentiate its Android products. Previous attempts with this form factor have failed.
Update: On closer inspection, our initial assessment of this device was incorrect. The Samsung Galaxy Beam is the first credible projector phone after years of failed attempts. Although a niche product it could surprise the market, as well as acting as another “halo” product for Samsung.

Geoff Blaber: The Eluga is a bold choice to spearhead its return to Europe. Panasonic has clearly opted to differentiate through screen size (five inches) and waterproofing, but it faces a hugely competitive market and precious few opportunities with tier-one operators.

Orange Launches Intel-Powered Smartphone
(http://www.orange.com/en_EN/press/press_releases/cp120227en.jsp)
Geoff Blaber: Orange is fully exploiting the investment made by Intel as it strives to re-enter the smartphone space with its Atom chipsets. The announcement is more significant to Intel than it is to Orange or indeed the consumer.

Doro Launches 3G Smartphone for Elderly
(http://www.virtualpressoffice.com/publicsiteContentFileAccess/735645/735645.html/?fileContentId=735645&fileName=735645.html&fromOtherPageToDisableHistory=Y)

Gavin Byrne: The most impressive thing about Huawei’s first 10-inch tablet, the MediaPad 10 FHD, is the choice of in-house silicon. We expect the price to be very competitive.

Asus Reveals Padfone Smartphone and Transformer Pad Infinity Tablets
Gavin Byrne: The Padfone marks a re-entry into the smartphone market and the new tablets build on the success of the Transformer brand.

Samsung Launches Galaxy Tab 2

John Jackson: A provocative and potentially disruptive move by Spreadtrum, taking a more direct position in mobile advertising and engagement with value-added service providers. The involvement of Chinese Internet giants is significant given Spreadtrum’s strong position in that market.
